Group for Molecular Biology
Department of Human Molecular Genetics and Genomics
Mila Ljujić, PhD, is a Senior Research Associate in the Group for Molecular Biology IMGGE. She earned her PhD from the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Biology, Serbia, before completing a 2-year postdoc at the Apoptosis Research Center, University of Galway, Ireland where she worked on the role of ER stress in inflammation and its targeting as a therapeutic approach in sepsis.
Her research focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a topic she has been dedicated to since the beginning of her scientific career, as well as on cell stress response. Her current work employs a multi-omics approach, including transcriptomics, proteomics, single-cell, and spatial transcriptomics, to investigate the effects of electronic cigarettes on lung cell homeostasis and in a zebrafish model. She is the recipient of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Laurell's Training Award (ALTA). She participates in several EU and national projects, including innovation-driven projects.
She is a member of IMGGE Scientific Council and was a member of the team that developed the Institute's strategic plan. She is engaged in educational activities through mentoring and supervising BSc, MSc, and PhD students, and as a lecturer in PhD program Molecular Biology of the Cell at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade.
