Department of Human Molecular Genetics and Genomics
Andrijana Lazić, PhD, is a molecular biologist specializing in molecular and cellular neurobiology. She obtained a graduation degree in Molecular Biology and Physiology in 2001 at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade. Her PhD dissertation, earned in 2006 at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Milan, Italy, focused on transcription repressor REST/NRSF and its role in acquiring and maintaining the neurosecretory ability of neural cells.
She has been employed at IMGGE since 2008. Prior to employment at the IMGGE, she spent six years in the Laboratory for Cellular and Molecular Biology at the San Raffaele Institute in Milan, Italy, where she completed experimental part of her PhD dissertation under supervision of Prof. Jacopo Meldolesi. Currently, she is Associate Research Professor and a member of Human Molecular Genetics Group. Her research is focused on the study of SOX genes-related molecular mechanisms underlining neural differentiation and the reactivation of astrocytes. Also, one of her research interests is the establishment of assays for in vitro testing of neuroprotective properties of various compounds.
She is involved in scientific education. She has supervised 1 doctoral dissertation, 2 master’s theses, and 1 undergraduate thesis. She was contributor to doctoral education (PhD course: "Molecular Biology of Genes") at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade by giving a lecture entitled: “Cell reprogramming, induced pluripotent stem cells, induction factors”. She is the coordinator of an international manifestation “UniStem Day”, dedicated to the promotion of stem cell research among high school students.
