Molecular diagnosis of familial Mediterranean fever
Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autoinflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent short episodes of fever and serositis resulting in pain in the abdomen, chest, joints and muscles. FMF is primarily found in the south-eastern Mediterranean area. Populations having a high prevalence of the disease are non-Ashkenazi Jews, Turks, Armenians and Arabs. It is not considered rare in Italy, Greece or Spain. Disease is caused by mutations in FMF gene.
Laboratory for molecular biomedicine conducts analysis of the tenth exon of the FMF gene which contains the most frequent mutations (p.M680I, p.M694V, p.M694I, p.V726A).
It is necessary to deliver 2.5 ml of peripheral blood using 3.8% sodium citrate as anticoagulant. It is possible to deliver a blood sample that has already been frozen. The samples are accepted every day from 10 to 13h. There is possibility to deliver the sample via post express service. The analysis is performed within 10 working days. The results and the bill are sent to the patient's home address, or can be collected personally at the Institute from 10 to 16h every day.
