Enzyme from the hot spring Vranjska Banja against superbugs

A new enzyme was discovered from bacteria living in the hot spring Vranjska Banja that can disarm the dangerous, drug-resistant superbug Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Instead of killing the bacteria, the enzyme blocks its ability to cause disease by disrupting its internal communication system. This approach reduces biofilm formation and makes antibiotics like gentamicin and meropenem more effective. In lab and animal tests, the enzyme improved treatment outcomes, offering a promising new way to fight antibiotic resistance.

This research was carried out in collaboration with colleagues from the International University Politecnico di Torino and Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade
