Milica Ćirić, PhD, is a molecular biologist interested in identification of novel microbial biocatalysts from various environmental sources for biotechnological applications in plastics and biomass degradation, using both traditional and metagenomic approaches. Milica is a PI of the project focused on de novo sequencing of selected strains with biomass-degrading and bioremediation potential, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Joint Genome Institute. As a Postdoctoral Scientist in the Ministry for Primary Industries in New Zealand, she worked on characterization of intestinal microbiota of farmed Chinook salmon using 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding. During her PhD at AgResearch Ltd. and at the Massey University in New Zealand, Milica developed a new approach for mining surface and secreted proteins from microbial communities using phage display.
